Epithermal gold and silver deposits form in the shallow parts of once active geothermal systems. Ore bodies are commonly hosted in veins, many of which are blind to the surface. The ore bodies are small in comparison to the dimensions of the geothermal systems in which they form, but they can contain very rich ores (bonanza grade) and have metal contents that match the largest gold and silver deposits in the world. The depth level of exposure is critical in assessing the exploration potential of a prospect, deposit or district. Correct interpretation of hydrothermal alteration patterns is a key guide to knowing the exploration potential of new prospects and mature districts.

Services involving determination of alteration mineralogy (petrography, XRD) and application of fluid inclusions are available.
